HIV/AIDS and Alaska Natives/American Indians

Recent studies have shown that most Alaska Natives and American Indians do not get tested for HIV until later in the development of their disease. Quite often, they get tested when they become ill.

While Native people in Alaska make up 19% of the State's population, 23% of HIV cases in Alaska were Alaska Native/American Indians (AN/AI). Furthermore, HIV/AIDS statistics as of December 2004, show that HIV cases have been rising steadily, from 172 cumulative cases in 2001 to 228 cases as of December 31, 2004.
